Brodac Micro Residencies
Thirty days in the gallery. Fifteen to work, seven to install, seven for the public.
An artist or a collective moves into the gallery for a month. For that time the space is a studio; at the end it is an exhibition space. The work is made here, installed here and shown here.
The programme does not separate process from result. The resident works and decides how that work is shown — the artistic and the curatorial job are one job. This is the position the gallery has worked from since 2016.
Thirty days
The schedule is fixed. The deadline is part of the programme, not pressure from outside.
Studio
Fifteen working days in the space, with a key and independent access. No obligation to an audience. During this period the gallery receives visitors only by arrangement with the resident.
Install
Seven days to move from studio to exhibition: selection, mounting, lighting, labels and text. The gallery's technical support is available throughout.
Exhibition
Seven days open to the public, admission free. Within that week two events: an art talk and a tour of the exhibition led by the artist. The work comes down on day thirty.
Artists are workers. The programme is measured by how long the work takes, not by how long the exhibition lasts.
Up to thirty
The call is open to artists and to collectives of young artists up to thirty years of age. A collective applies as one, and the age limit applies to every member.
A degree is not a requirement. An exhibition history is not a requirement. The medium is not restricted — painting, sculpture, photography, video, sound, performance, installation, intervention in space.
For many this is a first solo exhibition. The gallery records those separately, in the index of first solo shows.
The gallery provides

- Ground floor, a former stable. The same room serves as studio and as exhibition space, for thirty days.

- A key and independent entry for the whole residency.
- Install
- Tools, lighting, hanging and technical support for install and de-install.
- Communication
- Announcement, press, social media and publication of the exhibition text.
- Documentation
- Installation photography, which the artist also keeps.
- Archive
- An entry in the gallery archive and a page in the artist index.
- Programme
- An art talk and an artist-led tour as part of the gallery's official programme.
The resident takes on
- Presence
- The programme is not done remotely. Fifteen working days means working in the space.
- Programme
- One art talk and one public tour of the exhibition.
- Material
- Material and production of the work itself.
- Archive
- Handing over documentation of the work for the gallery archive.
- Space
- The space is returned in the condition it was taken in.
Accommodation and a fee are not part of the basic package. Where funding is secured for a given cycle, it is stated with that call. The gallery holds that artistic work is work, and does not claim to have paid for it when it has not.
Brodac 4
The building stands beside the City Hall. Built as a municipal building, it was put into use as a prison. The gallery space is a former stable; beneath it are catacombs. Until 2016 a tavern operated here.
The call is permanently open
Applications are read continuously. A reply comes within thirty days. The residency dates are agreed after selection.
- Name and contact. Artist or collective name, email, phone, Instagram or website if you have one.
- Year of birth. For every member of a collective.
- Portfolio. Up to fifteen works — a link to a website, Drive or PDF. Do not send attachments over 10 MB.
- Proposal. Up to 400 words: what you do in those fifteen days and how it becomes an exhibition.
- Technical needs. Power, sound, projection, heavy material, dust, waste, damp.
- Timing. Which month suits you and which does not.

Selection is made by a team of three permanent gallery artists. What is weighed is feasibility within thirty days and the relation of the work to this space. Medium and format are not criteria.
There is no application fee and no participation fee.
- Can I apply from outside Bosnia and Herzegovina?
- Yes. The programme is open regardless of citizenship or where you work. The gallery does not arrange travel, visas or accommodation.
- Does the work have to be made in the gallery?
- Yes. Fifteen days of work in the space is the core of the programme. Finished work does not belong in this call — that is an ordinary exhibition proposal.
- What if the work is not finished?
- The exhibition shows what was made. Unfinished work is a result like any other and is installed as such.
- How many of us can apply?
- A collective applies as one. State the number of members in the application, together with how you intend to share the space and the time.
- Are there exceptions to the age limit?
- The limit is thirty years on the day of application and applies to every member of a collective.
- Can work be sold?
- Sales are agreed before the residency begins and written into the agreement with the gallery.
