Watercolor and ink workshop with artist Maja Ružnić — Saturday, July 13, 2019, 3pm–7pm at Brodac Gallery The event is part of the conference "Visual Culture in Postwar Society" organized by Kuma International together with Dr. Stephenie Young and Dr. Lauren Walsh, sponsored by the US Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The workshop hosts a maximum of 15 participants. Through the process of intuitive mark making, students explore working from memory to create their own painting vocabulary. The class focuses on how different emotions can be expressed through different line and mark qualities. Relying on the aqueous quality of watercolour and their own un-censored gestures, students mine their own histories to express personal narratives, and learn about the emotional qualities of colour. BIO — Maja Ružnić is primarily a painter, a storyteller who conjures form and narrative from ground-up mineral, smeared oil, and stained canvas. Born in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1983, Ruznic immigrated to the United States with her family in 1995, settling on the West Coast, where she studied at the University of California, Berkeley, later receiving an MFA from the California College of Arts. Her vivid paintings depict figures that seem to emerge from the caverns of human history. Ruznic has exhibited internationally and her work has been written about in ArtMaze Magazine, Juxtapoz, San Francisco Bay Guardian, Studio Visit Magazine, and twice in New American Paintings, including the cover selected by curator Anne Ellegood. In 2018 she received the Hopper Prize, and in 2019 her painting "Azmira's Daughters" was acquired by the Dallas Museum of Art.
