PRESENT PERFECT at Brodac — Presenting: Fabio La Fauci (08.–21.09.2016.)
La Fauci's experimental approach to making art produces surprising new forms and meanings. A process of continuous enquiry infuses his practice with a strong energy, manifest in his continuing exploration of a multitude of media, materials and ways of reshaping the world around us. He proposes a new language by expressing the fusion of organic and artificial elements within contained shapes. The juxtaposition of geometries with organic forms seems to be a constant theme in his recent works and represents the dual nature of things. Materials, forms and undisclosed concepts confound the viewer, and these disorienting sensations reflect the artist's purpose of historical references and visual effects.
The context of the exhibition adds a second layer to the interpretation of the works. We are in Sarajevo, a multi-ethnic and multi-religious city that suffered a horrible war; moreover we are in a space — Brodac Gallery — that previously was a prison. This coincidence connects La Fauci's exhibition to another concept by Louise Bourgeois who, describing her famous Cells, declares: "The Cells represent different types of pain: physical, emotional and psychological, mental and intellectual… Each Cell deals with a fear. Fear is pain… Each Cell deals with the pleasure of the voyeur, the thrill of looking and being looked at."
In its new status Brodac Gallery, through the seed of art, takes the opportunity of a second life. In this way the artist teaches us that there is always a plan B, the possibility of a different choice and to overcome every fear. This makes us believe again in the incredible power of Art.
