THOMAS STEYAERT — SOME WORKS 2019/2020
Thomas Steyaert (Roeselare, BE, 1978) – choreographer / performer / visual artist
STAGE/PERFORMATIVE WORK: Thomas Steyaert's artistic practice explores a system of real-time physical communication between performers. This body practice could be seen as an analogy for the inner movements of a society—movements that test, map and transform a specific existing structure in a specific moment of time. In 2016, together with four Sarajevo-based artists (BiH), he founded the collective 'Moving Island', producing multimedia projects in local communities and raising awareness of the importance of social practices in art.
PAINTING/DRAWING: His training and years of international experience as a dancer, performer and choreographer (encounters with Wim Vandekeybus, Pina Bausch, William Forsythe, Jan Fabre, Ivo van Hove, David Eugene Edwards, David Byrne, CHVE and others) left him with a great curiosity about the use, creation and aesthetics of images in different media. Painting and drawing have become essential components of his artistic language; his style varies from figurative, naïve and cartoonish to more elaborate and complex abstract-figurative works.
"I guess that the work is a playful reflection on power structures and pain caused by violent political and economical systems. George Condo states that most of the characters he paints are kind of lunatics, that we must live in a crazy world. I somehow can identify with this."
The work of Thomas Steyaert has been shown in theatres, festivals, museums, and site-specific locations in Europe and abroad. Visual editing: Hanan Delić
