Inside-Outside at Brodac (Velma Babić)

"I have been raised in the former Yugoslav Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and am part of that generation which had to live the start of the war in their home country at the beginning of the nineties. In the following exile, I have noticed a perceivable and eerie ambiguity between the then fresh experience and images from home during the war on one side, and the images from a peaceful and strange new country on the other side. Reality in fact compared to a motion picture: a certain number of frames per second is being recorded and our perception will connect them to make a continuous film. For me, this reality has been fragmented; between the images of the new environment gaps opened up, which I have filled with images and experiences of loss and memories, just like other people who were forced to leave their homes. With my repeated changes of place of living (former Yugoslavia, Germany, Colombia, USA and currently Germany again), I have increasingly felt incapable to articulate adequately neither these experiences nor my identity to my environment. The impression of speechlessness has been dominant over decades. This subjective work with my identity has brought me to photography. I am pointing the camera on myself, being both the object and the subject of the photography.
